What is a Doula?

A doula is an experienced and knowledgeable guide who accompanies you on your journey through labor and birth.

A doula:

  • Understands the physiology and anatomy of birth in each of its stages
  • Uses her knowledge, professional training, and experience as tools to help a laboring woman have a more comfortable and empowered birth
  • Recognizes that a woman benefits from being able to make her own decisions about her birth
  • Enhances the support of the woman’s partner, if present, and does not take his/her place
  • Puts the woman first and does not offer unsolicited advice or push her own agenda
  • Honors and protects the birthing space

Doulas have education in the birth process and its stages and complications. They are trained to provide both physical and emotional support as needed. Doulas have many tools at their fingertips to provide comfort, knowledge, and reassurance to enhance and support a woman’s birth experience.
